Want to play a TTRPG but haven't a clue where to start? Play this.
This has to be one of the best starter sets I have ever played. No need to read through either of the handbooks provided you can play it straight from the box using the pre-generated characters. Everything is covered for someone who has never played before. Even the dice are colour coded with references to which dice to use on the character sheets. All the materials provided are of an excellent quality, the map can take drink spillages and be wiped clean without any damage. The condition/rule reminder cards are a great addition that will be good for experienced players as well as new ones. The pawns are good as well, especially if you don't want to splash out on a load of miniatures or you're not a great painter of them (like me).
The group adventure is really good and takes the players, GM included, through the mechanics of the game as you play. The whole first level is like playing a tutorial, introducing new mechanics with each room you enter. It can easily take 2 or 3 sessions to complete, though the GM's guide does provide you with more details about the place it is set in so you can expand it with a bit of homebrewing the next time you want to play the adventure. The players handbook gives you options to create your own characters, though it is limited to 3 races and 4 architypes. They are enough for you to get to grips with the character creation process and provide you with some more options for further playthroughs of the adventure. There is a solo adventure included as well, which was a pleasant surprise for me, but I haven't had time to play that yet.
All in all this set is a fantastic way to start playing TTRPG's and I'll be using it to introduce new players to the game, especially people who want to run a game (and I can play a character instead of being a GM all the time). It's also dangerous .. in a good way. Why? Because after playing this you will want to get the core rule books so you can expand your character options and set out to explore more of what Golarion has to offer. I know me and my group do.
